Biography

Jennifer Pernas was born in Colombia and educated in the U.S. She earned her undergraduate degree from Florida International University (FIU) and her law degree from Indiana University Maurer School of Law. While attending law school, Ms. Pernas was a founding member of the first
LGBTQI clinical project in the Midwest, which resulted in the publication, More Than Just a Couple: 614 Reasons Why Marriage Equality Matters in Indiana. This comprehensive statutory survey of marriage-related rights and responsibilities was later cited by U.S. Judge Richard Young in striking down Indiana’s same-sex marriage ban (Baskin v. Bogan, 12 F. Supp. 3d 1144, 1161 (S.D. Ind.), aff’d, 766 F.3d 648 (7th Cir. 2014)).

Immigration Expertise & Recognition

Ms. Pernas’s areas of practice and expertise include assisting clients with family-based, employment-based, and humanitarian immigration cases, with a particular focus on T visa cases for the past couple of years. In 2019, she was honored to be named a Consulting Attorney at the Mexican
Consulate in Detroit, Michigan. She has also spoken as a subject-matter expert at the 2021 American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) Chicago Fall Employment Conference on Schedule A Updates relating to Physical Therapists and Registered Nurses, as well as H-1B Specialty Occupation. Most recently, Ms. Pernas was recognized as a Super Lawyers’ Michigan Rising Star for 2023, 2024, and 2025.

Personal Life & Advocacy

In her personal time, Ms. Pernas enjoys traveling, visiting museums, and sightseeing with her husband and child, and spending time with their three cats. She is also very active in children’s special needs educational advocacy and Autism inclusion awareness.
