Citizenship by Birth

    • Born in U.S. territory (including Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Virgin Islands).
    • Child of U.S. citizens born abroad may also be a citizen if parents meet certain residency requirements.
  3. Process for Obtaining Birthright Citizenship:
    • For U.S. born, a birth certificate issued by the state or locality is required.
    • For children of citizens born abroad, Form FS-240 (Consular Report of Birth Abroad) is filed.
    • Apply for a U.S. passport as proof of citizenship.
